Before You Let Your Child Date
While most parents hope their teens will wind up happily married, many will discourage them from dating. At least until after college. And often until their child is established in their career.
And this makes a lot of sense. They can’t even get a driver’s license until they’re 16. When will they ever be ready for a marriage license, right?
Some even jokingly (or maybe seriously) will say things like, “My child isn’t allowed to date until their 30s.”
But instead of simply discouraging (or forbidding) dating, what about equipping your child to actually thrive in their dating life?
After all, driver’s licenses aren’t just passed out to every 16-year-old. One must first demonstrate comprehension of essential rules of the road and command of requisite driving skills.
But, in contrast, a marriage license is a simple contract (like a car title) and obtained without any education or experience at all. This is why so many marriages end up in the ditch.
Of course there’s premarital counseling, but that’s usually too little too late. Even programs with significant scope and depth, deliver too much… too late. And since most premarital counseling only occurs when the wedding is weeks away, it’s frequently too much… much too late.
Oh… and in case you haven’t heard, fewer and fewer are marrying at all anymore. Because the path to marriage today is clouded by sexual brokenness, unrealistic expectations, confusion, and fear. But…
