The church taught me…
- To be ashamed of my body
- To hide my body
- My body is an object of lust
- My body is evil
Whether or not these messages were intentionally communicated by the church or whether they were misconstrued from what was actually taught, I could not say.
What I can say is the church doesn’t hold the corner on body shame. Whether you’re talking about the majority trying to sculpt their bodies according to an unattainable ideal or a minority who feel trapped in the wrong body altogether, our culture seems desperately conflicted about this thing we have to feed and groom. But…
The message of God’s word is clear. Your body is “very good.”
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” – Gen 1:31a
What’s that you say?
“That scripture doesn’t say that ‘my body is very good.’ It only says (generically) ‘everything God made was very good.'”
True. You got me there.
But wait a minute.
Up until the arrival of man, God didn’t describe his creation as “very good.”
Everything else up to this point only got a “Good” sticker.
- Light = Good
- Sea and land = Good
- Vegetation = Good
- Sun & moon (Oh! And the other billions of stars, planets and moons) = Good
- Air & water creatures = Good
- Land creatures = Good
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” – Gen 1:26-27 (ESV)
Only after God creates the first man and woman does He finally pull out the “Very Good” sticker.
“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.” – Gen 1:31 (ESV)
So we see, that “very good” most definitely includes your body. Which includes your sexual anatomy, by the way.
I’m sorry. What?
“I missed the part about the sexual anatomy being ‘very good.'”
Look again at verse 27 where it concludes: “Male and female he created them.”
Contrary to contemporary rumor, you can’t have gender without sex organs. Even someone like Caitlyn Jenner knows this. That’s why Bruce had his sex organs changed. He wanted to be a “she,” and wanted the sexual anatomy to make it official.
But I also want to point out that, regardless of what anyone says their church taught them…
Satan did not give Adam and Eve their sex organs. God created them male and female from the start. It was part of His meticulous and magnificent design!
In fact, when we zoom in to get a close up of what happened the day God created man and woman, we find that after God had made man in male form alone he said something astonishing: it was NOT good.
“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’” – Gen 2:18 (ESV)
So to sum up:
- Creation sans humans = good
- Creation with man alone = NOT good
- Creation with male and female = VERY GOOD
So wherever they’re coming from, stop listening to lies about your body being bad.
The creator of all matter, and the only authority on the matter pronounced the body: very good. Male and female, very good.
And it is still very good. Even yours.
Of course it doesn’t feel that way, and that’s why we will continue our series, The Naked Truth About Your Body, next week. I hope you’ll tune in then for the post, Your Body is NOTHING to be Ashamed Of.
DNA: It’s What’s For Dating
It’s NOT for couples, but for any wise individual who thinks they might want to get married sometime before they die. And would like to learn how to better build healthy relationships in the meantime.
Check out all three study guides in our store. You can walk through them on your own, but it’s more fun with friends (that and it kinda makes sense to grow in relational success in actual relationships with others), so consider putting together an FMU LoveEd small group study.
Even better? And ask a rock star married couple you respect to lead it!
